Your 1st TAB Song

Here is the single most common riff known to anyone that has a clue about playing the guitar.  This riff has become kind of like an initiation into playing the guitar.

Tips:

  • Learn 1 measure at a time.
  • Pay attention to the left hand finger #’s at the bottom of the TAB.
  • Go Slow and be accurate!!!
  • Memorize the riff.  Notice that the 1st and 3rd measures are the same notes.
  • Practice along with the recorded track above.
  • When you have it down, try the riff on different strings.

Haha. I thought the fingerings were the bass line frets at first (low E) and when I got to 2nd fret on low E with 1st finger and 6th fret on high E with pinky was a stretch. Ah well, got a little hand exercise. 🙂

Oh, I see what you did! That must have sounded funny. The numbers have to be on one of the 6 string lines to be a fret #. The ones below the 6th string(low E) are left hand finger #’s. One thing most TABS you find on the internet lack are left hand fingerings and the other is rhythms. Ironically they are also the two things that most beginners need the most help with.

I am a new student. My brother went to learn how to play the guitar, so i might ask him later. Just info about me, i know how to play the violin and i was self taught how to play the piano. I was thinking that i could self teach the guitar. But right now I’m confused about the tabs and how to play them. I also don’t understand which line on the tab represents what string on the string. The guitar is also not the perfect size for me, it is a little big. so do you think that i should get a smaller guitar to learn from, so should the size i have right now do just fine. If anyone can answer my questions, i would be delighted. Thank you.

The correct size guitar is very important when starting to learn guitar for the first time. I always prefer to err on the side of smaller rather than bigger for beginner guitarists. That way you don’t struggle with an instrument thats too big. I would also suggest that you Read and Learn all the lessons in the Basics section of the website. It is extremely important that you understand this stuff 1st if you are going to make any significant progress. You will also see that there is a lesson on how to read TABS there as well. The problem with teaching oneself is that we get too eager and then skip the basics and without this we inadvertently create bad habits that hurt us rather than help us to succeed. Good Luck!
