The Fretboard just refers specifically to the front portion of the neck, the playing area. The purpose of this lesson is also to give you a basic understanding of how the notes on the fretboard are laid out.
Things to note:
- Most guitars have 22 frets but some can have up to 24 or as few as 18 on smaller guitars for kids.
- There are fret markers at 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 15, 17, 19, 21 and 24 for your convenience.
- The dots are doubled at the 12th fret to mark the octave above. This is also where the pattern on the fretboard starts over again. Take a look at the diagram below and notice how the notes from the Open Strings to the 11th fret are the same as the notes from the12th fret to the 23rd fret.
- Notice also how the same note repeats diagonally across the fretboard.
You should now have a basic understanding of the guitar fretboard. Though it may seem simple enough, it takes most people a life time to truly understand the fretboard.
