Rhythmic Notation

Also known as Slash Notation, Rhythmic notation is used when dealing with rhythms only.

Rhythmic notation uses slashes in the middle of the staff to indicate rhythm only.  It helps you focus only on rhythm since it doesn’t use the typical egg shaped notes heads that are used to indicate pitch.

Rhythmic Notation:

slash 8th

Here is the same thing in standard notation.  It uses egg shape note heads on different lines or spaces to indicate actual pitch.

Standard Notation:

8ths

Rhythmic notation is very common and is seen often in:

  • guitar music- used for strum patterns.
  • music for percussionists.  Like drums, congas etc..
  • Lead sheets when there are hits that everyone plays together.
