Intro to Rhythm

Rhythm is what makes music enjoyable; it’s infectious and is the reason why you inadvertently find yourself tapping along to a good song.  Consequently, if you can’t keep a steady beat, the music will suffer greatly.  Even if you are not interested in learning how to read music, do yourself and everyone you play with a favor, and learn your Rhythms.  You won’t regret it!


1. Rhythm is a written language using symbols to tell us when to play and when not to play.  It is written on the music staff which is divided in to equal sections of time called Bar or Measures.  Think of each bar of music like an uncut cherry pie.

2. Written rhythmic symbols tell us how this measure or piece of time is being divided:

3. There are also rhythmic symbols to tell us when not to play within each measure:
