CAGED Major Pentatonic- Practicing All 5 forms:
Once you’ve learned how to play each of the 5 forms correctly it is time to practice them all together. This will really give you a sense of the bigger picture. In order to be ready for this exercise you should already be relatively comfortable with all 5 forms of this scale including their shape, associated name and fingerings.
Pay close attention to:
- Correct fingerings. Form the correct habits now and you’ll save yourself a lot of work later on.
- Picking Pattern. I suggest that you alternate pick. Start with a down and alternate the whole time. If you have trouble with this you can try all down strokes until you’re comfortable with alternating.
- Stay in rhythm. If you can’t keep up you may need to spend some time at a slower tempo with the metronome. Or even better get a Slow Downer app that will allow you to take the track I’ve provided and slow it to a more appropriate tempo for you personally. I’ve provided a link to the one I use at the bottom of this lesson.
Here is how you should play this exercise:
Here is how the music above should sound. Try it with this a few times first and then move on to the Play along track below when you think you’ve got it.
Here is a play along for it in D Major. If you can play it with this you’ve got a good handle on all 5 scale forms. If you really want to have some fun try also improvising over this track. Use your favorite form or try all 5!
*If you are having trouble with the tempo here is a great program that will allow you to slow it down or speed it up to your liking. There are other apps like it . This is the one I use on a daily basis. It is for Android but there is also one for MAC too.
