The Musical Alphabet – The Naturals

The musical alphabet:

A B C D E F G

*It is easiest to visualize on the piano
keyboard

Important things to notice:

  • The musical alphabet contains only 7 letter names: A B C D E F G.
  • After G the alphabet starts over again on A.
  • There are 12 notes total, 7 white notes and 5 black notes, then the pattern repeats.
  • The white notes are referred to as The Naturals because they don’t have a #sharp or a b flat next to them like the black ones do.
  •   There are no black notes between  E&F and  B&C.

*If you are going learn how to play the guitar or any other instrument it is extremely helpful to learn a basic understanding of music theory.  The easiest way to do this is always to picture a piano in your mind.  We always use piano when thinking and learning about music theory because it is the most logically laid out instrument because the notes appear in order from left to right ascending from low to high.

Thanks Georgia! It’s nice to get feedback. Trying to keep one concept to a page and get the point across with out being too wordy. I also put links at the bottom of the page so you can see what the best following lesson would be after you learn the one you’re on, as well as, what the previous one might be if you don’t understand. You might also notice certain terms might have links in the page if I think there is a chance the reader may not know them. I am going to be adding a lot more pages over the summer and hopefully some videos as well to supplement all the text. Please let me know if you have questions, and or any lesson concepts that you don’t see.
